Surry Hills is a central suburb of Sydney, located just 1 kilometre south east of the CBD, in the local government area of the City of Sydney.
Getting there and getting around
Surry Hills is serviced by many major bus routes including all that run along the major thoroughfares of George Street and Elizabeth Street. It is a short walking distance from Central Station, the biggest station on the Sydney Trains Network. As with many parts of inner city Sydney there are also an increasing number of bicycle paths.
Lifestyle and population
Surry Hills boasts a rich diversity of cafes, restaurants, pubs, and shops. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the Victorian period and a significant number are heritage listed. Aside from Victorian terrace houses there are also a number of high rise public housing apartment buildings in the area. Surry Hills has a number of popular cultural and community attractions including the Surry Hills market, Belvoir Street Theatre and Prince Alfred Park.
The population of Surry Hills is just over 15,300. A particularly significant thing about the suburb is that nearly 70% of residences are apartments, flats or units.
