Leichhardt is located in Sydney’s inner west. It is 5 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD, in the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt.

Getting there and getting around

Leichhardt has a range of transport options. There are many bus services that access the area including the Metrobus 10 and numerous Sydney Buses routes such as the 370, 440, 444 and 470 (among many others). Petersham Railway Station on the Airport, Inner West and South Line is the closest train station. The area is also serviced by the Dulwich Hill Line of Sydney’s Light Rail Network, with stops including Leichhardt North, Hawthorne and Taverners Hill.

Lifestyle and population

Sometimes referred to as ‘Little Italy’ Leichhardt is a vibrant suburb with – as the nickname would suggest – an active Italian population. This includes the unique area called the Italian Forum which is a pedestrian only courtyard surrounded by cafes, apartments and shops, designed to feel like a European piazza. Norton Street commercial area also has a large number of restaurants, small retail and shopping centres. There are many parks and recreation areas in Leichhardt including Leichhardt Oval, War Memorial Park, Blackmore Oval and Lambert Park. A number of buildings are registered with the National Estate including the Post office and Town Hall.

Leichhardt has a population of just over 13,500 people. About 65% of Leichhardt residents were born in Australia.
