Canterbury is south-western suburb of Sydney. It is located 10.5 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury. The suburb is located across Cooks River (with one road providing vehicle access and two footbridges providing pedestrian access across the river).

Getting there and getting around

Canterbury Railway Station is on the Bankstown Line of the Sydney Rail Network. The area is also serviced by numerous buses including the 428, L28, and 487 routes of the Sydney Buses Network. The suburb has popular walking and cycling tracks, in particular the Cooks River cycling track.

Lifestyle and population

The area has a mix of residential, retail, commercial and light industrial development areas. The main shopping precinct is located close to Canterbury Railway Station. As well as general parkland along the banks of Cooks River, the area has a number of dedicated parks and recreation facilities. These include Canterbury Park Racecourse, Mary McKillop Reserve and Tasker Park.

Canterbury has a population of just over 6,100 people. The area has a vibrant mix of diverse cultures. Less than 46% of Canterbury residents were born in Australia.
