Balmain is an inner-west suburb of Sydney. It is located about 9 kilometres west of the CBD, in the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt. The suburb is located on Balmain Peninsula on Sydney Harbour.
Getting there and getting around
The primary mode of transport for getting to and from Balmain is ferry. The area has several ferry wharves serviced by the Inner Harbour ferry services. These services connect the area with Circular Quay. Balmain can also be accessed by a number of bus routes on the Sydney Buses network including the 441, 442, 444/445 and 433.

Balmain is a traditionally working class suburb that has gone through a process of gentrification. It is now host to a diverse range of residents and lifestyles, from inhabitants of the many Edwardian and Victorian era houses (many of which are protected by heritage guidelines) to housing commission residents. Balmain has a vibrant commercial shopping strip along Darling Street, with many cafes and restaurants.
